INTRAUTERINE DEVICE (IUD)

An intrauterine device (IUD), also known as intrauterine contraceptive device (IUCD or ICD) or coil, is a small, often T-shaped birth control device that is inserted into a woman's uterus to prevent pregnancy. IUDs are one form of long-acting reversible birth control. Listed below are the IUDs available at Northwest Florida Woman Care.

Mirena

 

Mirena® is a hormone-releasing IUD that is over 99% effective at preventing pregnancy for as long as you want, for up to 5 years. Mirena can be used whether or not you have had a child. Mirena also treats heavy periods in women who choose intrauterine contraception.

  • Placed into the uterus by a trained healthcare provider during an office visit

  • You should do a monthly thread check to make sure it's in place—ask your healthcare provider to explain how

  • Placement of Mirena is nonsurgical

  • Reversible, so you can have it removed at any time and try to become pregnant right away

  • Placement takes only a few minutes

Liletta

 

LILETTA® (levonorgestrel-releasing intrauterine system) 52 mg is a hormone-releasing system placed in your uterus to prevent pregnancy for as long as you want for up to 5 years.

 

  • LILETTA is an IUS, intrauterine system (otherwise known as an intrauterine device or IUD) that is inserted into the uterus by a healthcare provider to prevent pregnancy.

  • LILETTA is proven to be >99% effective in preventing pregnancy for up to 4 years

  • LILETTA is a reversible form of birth control and your healthcare provider can remove it any time

Paragard

 

PARAGARD is a copper-releasing device that is placed in your uterus to prevent pregnancy for up to 10 years.

  • PARAGARD is the only IUD that’s completely hormone free

  • PARAGARD is a “T” shaped device made of soft, flexible plastic and copper (176 mg of copper wire wrapped on the vertical stem of the“T” shaped frame, and a 68.7 mg copper collar on each horizontal arm)

  • PARAGARD is over 99% effective and completely hormone free. It helps prevent pregnancy for up to 10 years, but your healthcare professional can remove it at any time

Nexplanon

 

NEXPLANON is a small, thin and flexible arm implant that provides up to 3 years of continuous birth control.

  • NEXPLANON puts a steady, low dose of hormone into your bloodstream. NEXPLANON works for up to 3 years to prevent pregnancy

Skyla

 

Skyla is an IUD that releases a low dose of hormones and prevents pregnancy for up to 3 years.

  • No daily pills, monthly refills, or trips to the pharmacy. You should make sure Skyla is in place with a monthly thread check. Your healthcare provider can show you how

  • Made of soft, flexible plastic

  • Reversible and can be removed by your healthcare provider at any time if you change your mind, so you can try to get pregnant right away
